FUN FACTS!

  • The Speke’s Hingeback Tortoise, scientifically known as Kinixys spekii, is a unique species of tortoise found in parts of Africa. Named after the famous British explorer John Hanning Speke, these tortoises are known for their distinct hinged shells that help protect them from predators. They are also recognizable by their small size, reaching approximately 10 inches in length, and their dark brown to black colored shell with a light yellow or tan underside.

One of the most interesting features of the Speke’s Hingeback Tortoise is its ability to close its shell tightly by hinging the plastron (underside) and carapace (top shell) together. This helps protect the tortoise from threats such as predators and extreme weather conditions. When threatened, the tortoise can quickly retreat into its shell and remain hidden until the danger has passed. In addition to their unique shell structure, Speke’s Hingeback Tortoises also have strong claws and a sharp beak that they use for digging and feeding on vegetation.

Speke’s Hingeback Tortoises are primarily herbivores, feeding on a variety of fruits, vegetables, and leafy greens. They are typically found in moist, wooded areas with plenty of vegetation to forage on. These tortoises are primarily solitary creatures, only coming together during the mating season. The females will lay a clutch of eggs in a shallow nest dug in the earth, and the eggs will hatch after an incubation period of around 4-6 months.

As with many species of tortoises, Speke’s Hingeback Tortoise populations are facing threats from habitat loss, illegal poaching, and the pet trade. Conservation efforts are being made to protect these unique tortoises and their habitats, including the establishment of protected areas and breeding programs in captivity. Through education and conservation efforts, it is hoped that the Speke’s Hingeback Tortoise will continue to thrive in the wild for future generations to appreciate and admire.
